Malawi Mission Trip

Spring 2011

In the spring of 2011, Grace Community Church in Winchester, Virginia  will be leading a trip to Blantyre, Malawi and the surrounding area.   The trip will have two purposes: first to construct several buildings for the orphanage and second to provide much needed medical supplies to the area.

Our plan is to provide supplies and labor to build three badly needed buildings which will be true multi purpose buildings.  These 30×60 foot steel buildings with metal roofs will serve as places for orphan care, schooling, and worship services.  These permanent buildings will replace current mud walls with thatched roofs that are in ruins.

Also we will be providing much needed medical care and supplies.   There will be a medical team which has arranged for low cost medicines that can be distributed to the orphans and people in surrounding villages.  Also the Lion’s Club has donated eye glasses that will be given out by the team.

Malawi located in southern Africa is a country about the size of Pennyslvania.  The people of Malawi are warm and loving, but have suffered much from famine, disease and economic woes.  Currently Malawi is the third poorest nation on earth.    Like much of Africa, HIV/AIDS and other diseases have been devastating.  At the end of 2007, an estimated 91,000 children in Malawi were living with HIV/AIDS and over a million children are orphans and have no parents to care for them.

In 2006, Grace Community Church first partnered with Rodgers Nkhoma to minister to the people of Malawi.  Currently GCC provides money for food for the many orphans who live in the area, but there are many more needs.

Our goal is to raise $35,000 for the supplies for this trip.  Construction costs for each of the buildings we plan on assembling are approximately $15,000 apiece.   The cost for the medicine and medical care will be approximately $5000.   In addition, each of the team members will need to raise $3000 for the cost of their trip (airfare, accomodations, and in-country transportation).     The mission team is grateful for the donations that we have received so far, but in order for this trip to happen we still need lots more partners.  What can you do to be part of this team serving the people of Malawi?
